Both our mission and vision are rooted in our kuleana. Kuleana is a uniquely Hawaiian value and practice which is loosely translated to mean "responsibility" or “duty.” Kuleana means much more than that, as it seems to include a broader sense of responsibility – a person’s responsibility to themselves and his/her community. Your kuleana comes from a place of privilege and honor. The word kuleana refers to a reciprocal relationship between the person who is responsible, and the thing which they are responsible for.

Our Mission is to fulfill our kuleana to our community, providing legal services in an ethical and compassionate manner, and empowering the disenfranchised through respectful education. 

Our Vision is to create an accessible office that is also a collaborative community; where clients are treated with dignity and welcomed into a feeling of safety, security, and compassion. Our service is grounded in honoring and fulfilling our kuleana and reciprocal respect with our clients and each other. Our work ethic and work product reflect our dedication to our mission, commitment to excellence, and the harmony by which we can accomplish more as a team than as any individual entity.

Our Story

After several years of working for other firms in a corporate mindset, Attorney Vanessa Ortega Bartsch sought to create a firm that returned to the concept and mission that was instilled during law school in Hawai'i and that drove her passion to become an attorney in the first place and be able to give back to the community. Thus, the Law Offices of Vanessa Ortega Bartsch was founded with the client and community in mind. We embody the spirit of community and hope, going above and beyond to ensure that our clients feel safe and welcome.
